DPR Hosts Inaugural “Fit 2 Live” Community Health Day

Media Contact:  John A. Stokes, (202) 673-2195 (DPR)

On Saturday, April 25, 2009, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Miss Black District of Columbia USA 2009, and several community organizations will unite to host the “Fit 2 Live Community Health and Law Day.”  This free health and law day will be held at Kenilworth-Parkside Recreation Center, located at 4300 Anacostia Avenue, NE, from 10:30 am to 3 pm.

The 2009 Fit 2 Live Community Health and Law Day is sponsored by Unity Health Care, Soul Day Spa, ReGeneration House of Praise, and The Washington Informer and is free of charge to the community.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington will also be present to provide their “Physical Healthy Driven” (PHD) health assessment program that consists of a mobile obstacle course. The course is designed to test muscular strength, endurance and cardio fitness and flexibility. Unity Health Care will supply free health screenings. The “Fit 2 Live” event is designed to motivate the community to begin healthy living for the whole year. Healthy beverages and snacks will be provided to participants free of charge.

The law portion of the event is comprised of several area lawyers who will provide free individual consultations in 20-minute intervals. In partnership with ReGeneration House of Praise, the legal consultations will be provided by DC Volunteer Lawyers Project and Georgetown University Law School legal clinics. Legal topics include family law, criminal law and juvenile law.

The inspiration to create this event stemmed from the Miss Black District of Columbia organization, a sub-organization of Miss Black USA, and its partnership with the 50 Million Pound Challenge.

“Our goal is to empower youth and their families to live healthy 365 days a year by taking steps to prevent childhood obesity and other health disparities that affect the Washington, DC community,” said Breyuna Williams, Miss Black District of Columbia 2009. “We are pleased to be hosting this event in conjunction with the Department of Parks and Recreation and we hope that all District residents join us for this terrific event.”
