This past weekend, 65 swimmers representing the DC Department of Parks and Recreation's competitive swim team competed in the 7th Annual National Black Heritage Championship Swim Meet in Cary, NC. DPR swimmers took home first place in the team competition for the first time in meet history. DPR parents were also recognized with the Spirit Award for the meet.
DPR swimmers were dominant in relay events and the team had several high point winners including USA Swimming National Junior qualifiers Joshua Tomlin and Sarah Lynch; Jaylyn Robinson also earned high point honors. Joshua Tomlin swam in an exhibition heat of the 50 freestyle against Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones and gave him a run for his money swimming a personal best time of 21.56 seconds, just slightly behind Jones’ time of 21.31 seconds. 764 swimmers, ages 5 to 25 years old, competed in the 7th Annual National Black Heritage Championship Swim Meet on over 30 teams from across the country, including teams from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, Florida , Michigan , Massachusetts, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
