Fenty Administration Opens Newly Renovated Petworth Recreation Center

Media Contact Only: John A. Stokes, (202) 673-2195 (DPR); Jack Pfeiffer, (202) 727-1751 (EOM)

Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Ximena Hartsock, acting director of the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, joined Ward 4 residents to open the newly renovated Petworth Recreation Center. Recent work on the recreation center consisted of several projects including resurfacing the heavily-used outdoor basketball courts, renovating the roof and interior of the recreation center, and installing a new water fountain.

“Making investments in our neighborhoods and our recreation facilities remains a priority for my administration,” said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. “Here at Petworth, assistance and leadership from the community was instrumental in turning the recreation center around and providing great recreational opportunities for our residents."

Renovations to the existing outdoor basketball courts consisted of installing a new cushioned playing surface, new basketball backboards and hoops. The playing surfaces are made of a patented composite with an acrylic recreational coating, designed to reduce cracking and weathering.

Interior renovations included painting, upgrading the restrooms, re-staining of hardwood floors, new tile floor, new exterior doors on the rear of the building, new blinds and furniture. Renovations of the kitchen area included installation of new appliances and cabinets. Additionally a non-functioning drinking fountain was replaced by a new filtered water fountain. Major repairs, renovation, and replacement of the roofing system was also completed.

“The celebration at the Petworth Recreation Center marks the completion of a fully renovated site,” said Ximena Hartsock, acting director of DPR.  “Children and families will now have new indoor and outdoor amenities to enjoy for years to come.”
