To give District youth an up-close and personal look at the fashion and entertainment industries, on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 75 teen participants and 15 adult chaperones from two DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) summer camps, Hands on the Future and Camp Runway, journeyed to downtown Manhattan in New York City.
While in New York City, youth visited New York's famous Fashion District , Macy's flagship store in Herald Square, one of the world's largest department stores since 1924, and many of the the smaller shops and stores throughout the Fashion District. DPR's youth designers purchased supplies, thread, fabric, buttons, and more.
Hands on the Future participants visited the historic SkyLine Studios, where they enjoyed a tour, participated in an extensive question and answer session about what happens in a studio and obtained hands-on experience about the music industry.
All of the participants visited Times Square and enjoyed some New York City sightseeing. The highlight of the trip was being part of the audience for a live two-hour taping of BET's popular TV show, 106 and Park. The show's special guest was renowned music star, Mariah Carey.
