(Washington, DC) Today, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Executive Director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM) Allen Y. Lew, and Interim Director of the Department of Parks & Recreation (DPR) Jesús Aguirre joined the community and youth boxing advocates to provide an update on renovation efforts scheduled for Bald Eagle Recreation Center.

“I wanted to again assure the community here as well as the dedicated boxing coaches that the renovations to Bald Eagle and the improved boxing facilities are indeed on the way,” said Mayor Fenty.  “I am confident that our team will create one of the best youth boxing facilities in the region.”

The modernized facility will receive significant space reconfiguration to meet current programming needs as well as accessibility upgrades to meet all Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.  Other improvements will include:

  • Mechanical systems upgrades
  • Refurbishing of interior finishes (floors, walls, ceilings)
  • 2 ADA bathrooms
  • New kitchen, dark rooms, trophy display, storage upgrades

Construction of a new 5,500 SF Boxing Annex—

  • Self-contained MEP
  • One large competition ring, 2 smaller practice rings
  • Reception/lobby, bathroom, office, warm-up areas
  • LEED Silver Certification

"DPR is pleased to work with OPEFM and the community to establish another high quality DPR facility," said  DPR Interim Director Jesús Aguirre. "Bald Eagle Recreation Center will provide a new boxing facility for the District's highly acclaimed youth boxers in addition to programs and services that cater to residents of all ages."

Last year Mayor Fenty toured the facility with OPEFM, DPR and the coaches who volunteer for the award-winning boxing program.

“When we toured the facility then, it was hard to believe that so many great things we’re happening in a space clearly not designed for a program of this magnitude,” said Director Lew. “Our team will deliver a first class space to match the success of the boxing program and hopefully spur the athletes to greater achievements in the years ahead.”
