(Washington, DC) In honor of the 100th anniversary of the McMillan Plan, residents are encouraged to take part in a walk/bike ride through the District this weekend.
DC Parks and Recreation has joined Washington Parks and People in coordinating the weekend festivities. The walk begins at 6:30 am, Saturday, October 5, at Fletcher's Boat House. The boat house is located at 4940 Canal Road, NW.
The McMillan Plan, a design for the nation's capital introduced in 1902, called for the creation of parks along the Potomac River. It also spurred the creation of the National Mall and Union Station.
"We are happy to take part in this historical event," Neil O. Albert, director, said. "The McMillan Plan laid the groundwork for today's Washington. It is important to honor the District's rich history with events that mirror the spirit of our diverse community."
Planned stops on the walking tour include various Civil War forts, Banneker Park, the National Arboretum, Watts Branch Park, Ladybird Park, and the homes of Frederick Douglass and Marvin Gaye.
