DC Parks and Recreation Calls for Centers to Display American Flag

Centers will display flag for 30 days.

WASHINGTON, DC -- In support of the resolution passed Thursday by the United States House of Representative requesting the mass display of the United States Flag for the next 30 days, DC Parks and Recreation will display the American Flag at 55 recreation centers across the city beginning on Friday, September 14, 2001.

Citizens are being urged by the lawmakers to fly the American flag outside their homes and businesses as a response to the terror attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The resolution passed unanimously by the House requested the mass display of Old Glory for the next 30 days.

"Our hearts go out to the loved ones of those whose lives were taken by Tuesday's events, and our thoughts and prayers remain with those injured and those still missing" said DC Parks and Recreation Director, Neil Albert, "the horrifying events of September 11th have touched all of us. The most vulnerable to the effects of this tragedy are our children. With an amazing capacity to perceive the feelings of parents, even infants far distant from the terror feel their parents' sadness, fear, frustration and anger."

Also on Friday, President George W. Bush has proclaimed Friday as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance and encouraged Americans to honor victims of the attacks by attending memorial services across the nation or other activities. Across the nation, thousands of Americans will mark this day with memorial services, bell ringing, candlelight vigils, and other solemn observances to remember the victims and their loved ones.
