DC Parks and Recreation Employee Receives National Recognition

Perrin garners National Conservation Achievement Award
for her work in environmental education.

(Washington, DC) ) Joyce E. Perrin, a supervisory recreation specialist for DC Parks and Recreation, is the 2001 recipient of the National Conservation Achievement Award.

The award, administered by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), honors exemplary leadership in protecting the environment and natural resources. NWF cites Ms. Perrin’s dedication to providing “interactive and engaging environmental education for the youth of Washington, DC.”

During NWF’s annual awards banquet, held on March 9 in Stone Mountain, Ga., Ms. Perrin received the National Conservation Achievement Award for education, one of 12 categories established to showcase outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations to conservation and environmental protection.

“Joyce Perrin teaches us all that we can learn about, explore and improve urban environments by using the local community as a classroom for our youth,” said NWF President Mark Van Putten. “Joyce is inspiring and educating the conservation leaders of tomorrow by giving them hands on experience with the environmental challenges of today.”

“DC Parks and Recreation is extremely proud of the work Joyce does,” DC Parks and Recreation Director Neil Albert said. “She serves as an ambassador for both DPR and the entire city of Washington. Her work illustrates the city’s continued dedication to the environment and open green space.”

In her role as the supervisory recreation specialist, Ms. Perrin spearheaded the creation of “Camp Natural Fun,” an interactive environmental science program designed to provide positive entertainment and educational opportunities for youth ages 3-17. The camp has motivated District young people to take an active part in nature conservation by improving their local environment and the quality of life in their communities.
