Boxers Compete for Mayor’s Cup

(Washington, DC) From August 22-24, ring novices from across the country will converge on the District to participate in the 2003 Mayor’s Cup Invitational Amateur Boxing Tournament.

The action kicks off Friday at 6 pm with the elimination matches. The championship round takes place Saturday at 4 pm.

Teams from states such as Maryland, Virginia, New York, Ohio, Georgia and the District will compete against one another at the Teamster 639 Center in Northeast Washington. All weight classes and age groups will be represented.

The event is a partnering effort between DC Parks and Recreation, DC Sports and Entertainment Commission and Boxing Information Center Inc.

The 2003 edition of the Mayor’s Cup illustrates the innovative approach to programming by DC Parks and Recreation.

“Boxing is one of the many programs offered by DC Parks and Recreation,” Neil O. Albert, DPR director, said. “The Mayor’s Cup brings the best and the brightest to the city of Washington for a sporting event fueled by the competitive spirit of young people. Our commitment to this event is shared by the Sports and Entertainment Commission and the Boxing Information Center and their support for a program like this that benefits youth is much appreciated.”

Tickets are still available for the weekend event. For ticket information, contact the Boxing Information Center at (202) 543-6006.
