Sherwood Center Opens Its Doors

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony Williams, Councilmember Sharon Ambrose and other city officials will be on hand for the grand opening of the new Sherwood Recreation Center.

The event will take place at 2:30 pm, Wednesday, October 8, 2003. The new center is located at 10th and G Streets, NE. Sign language interpretation will also take place during the event.

The neighborhood will now sport a new state-of-the-art recreation center and gymnasium, according to Neil Albert, director of DC Parks and Recreation.

“The Sherwood community has been involved with this project from the conceptual stage,” he said. “This building has been designed to meet the recreational needs of this diverse community.”

As a historic nod to the area’s rich basketball history, the Sherwood center will have some of the city’s best basketball amenities, both indoor and outdoor. In the 1960s, the center’s basketball courts served as one of the hot beds of Washington street ball. However, the indoor facilities at Sherwood were wholly inadequate to meet the needs of the community.

There are also fitness rooms, multi-purpose rooms and a social hall. A walking track sits adjacent to the recreation building.
