(Washington, DC) Attention, District youth. Want to make a difference in your community? Become a junior roving leader.
The Junior Roving Leader Program provides an opportunity for youth of the District of Columbia to develop solutions to issues that they identify to be most important. The focus of the intern program is to prepare young people to be self-sufficient, competent, and contributing members of society by exposing them to individuals and programs that promote character development, job training, college opportunities, enhance critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills.
Duties include: perform extensive neighborhood outreach and education/recreational activities; serve on citywide youth councils and task forces to present and address issues that affect youth; coordinate community clean-ups; participate in crime prevention programs in the community; and work as trained peer counselors.
Requirements:
- Must be between the ages of 16 to 24 years old
- Must be a DC resident
- Must be enrolled in an accredited high school or college with a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Must have a background check
- Must be familiar with District neighborhoods and communities
- Must be able to serve as an intern from December 1, 2003 through August 20, 2004
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends
- Experience with working with youth/youth development programming
- Experience working with culturally diverse populations
