DPW Observes Emancipation Day, Thursday, April 16

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today how services will be affected in observance of Emancipation Day on Thursday, April 16, 2009.

Trash Collection: There will be no trash and recycling collections. Trash and recycling collections will “slide” to the next day for the remainder of the week.  Thursday’s trash and recycling collections will be made on Friday and Friday’s collections will be made on Saturday.  This applies to both once-a-week and twice-a-week collection neighborhoods.  Trash and recycling containers should be put out for collection no earlier than 6:30 pm the night before collection and removed from public space by 8 pm on the day(s) of collection.

Parking Enforcement:  The agency will suspend enforcement of parking meters, residential parking, and rush hour lane restrictions. It also will suspend towing of abandoned vehicles.

Trash Transfer Stations:  The Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station will be open Thursday from 1 pm to 5 pm to accept residents’ bulk items.   The Benning Road Trash Transfer Station will be CLOSED Thursday.   The transfer stations will follow their normal operating hours on Friday.  Both the Ft. Totten and the Benning Road trash transfer stations will be open on Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm to receive residents’ unwanted toxic items, such as pesticides, batteries and motor oil.  Electronics, including televisions, computers and cell phones, also will be accepted.  Residents also may bring up to five boxes of personal paper documents and credit cards to be shredded for free.

Other services suspended for Emancipation Day include scheduled street and alley cleaning and nuisance abatement.

All services will resume Friday, April 17, 2009.
