(Washington DC) – Approximately 100 firefighters, EMTs and paramedics were recognized today for acts of heroism or excellence. Three firefighters who took part in the below-ground rescue of a family from an elevator shaft received both departmental and national heroism awards.
The honorees, along with family members and friends, attended the annual Departmental Awards Ceremony at the Washington Hilton and Towers Hotel at 1919 Connecticut Avenue in Northwest.
The mother of 25-year-old firefighter Michael G. Holmone Jr. accepted posthumously a pin and a “Certificate of Excellence” on behalf of her slain son. Holmone, who dedicated his life to firefighting and emergency medical services, was shot to death on May 12, 2007 in Northeast Washington. A suspect has been arrested in the case. Holmone was recognized today for assisting with the resuscitation of an elderly woman who was suffering from cardiac arrest in May of 2006.
DC Fire and EMS Chief Dennis L. Rubin said, “I could not be more proud of the men and women who make up this elite group of individuals. At the same time, I am saddened by the realization that Firefighter Holmone cannot be with us.”
