(Washington, DC) The Fourth of July season is a time of celebration. Unfortunately, it can also be a dangerous period for many Americans. In the United States, up to 10,000 people are injured while using fireworks each year. Some fireworks are permitted in the District of Columbia, but many are illegal. Any person found using or in possession of illegal fireworks could face fines and penalties of up to $1,000 and/or arrest for further prosecution.
The District's Fire and EMS Department website contains a comprehensive list of legal fireworks as well as enforcement information and safety tips. Fire and EMS Chief Dennis L. Rubin said, “I strongly encourage residents to use this vital resource to stay safe and secure this Fourth of July season. Fireworks injuries and fines can be avoided.”
