(Washington, DC) Paramedics are reaching more sick and injured patients in the District faster than at any time in the city’s history, according to just-released statistics.
The agency’s performance measure of having Advanced Life Support (ALS) resources to the scene of critical medical emergencies within eight minutes at least 90% of the time was reached and maintained on Saturday, August 26th. The measure is a goal established by industry professionals to ensure the best possible response time in any given emergency, particularly cardiac arrest.
“This achievement reflects the great work being done by the men and women who do this job and shows we have what it takes to provide this level of service,” said Fire/EMS Chief Adrian H. Thompson. “It demonstrates this agency’s and my dedication to the constant improvement of our service. Bottom line: more people are being treated, and more lives are being saved. This really is an historic time.”
The numbers also reflect a positive trend that has been in place this year. The improved response times are a product of several factors, including the addition of Paramedic Engine Companies (PEC), the hiring and retention of paramedics, and the establishment of a permanent Paramedic Supervisor in the communications division to ensure ALS resources are being used in the most effective ways.
