On Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at approximately 10:49 p.m., police responded to the 600 block of P Street, NW for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they located a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest lying on the sidewalk in front of 617 P Street.

DCFD emergency medical personnel responded to the scene. The victim, identified as 39-year-old Dwayne S. Purcell, of the unit block of Temple Court, NW, was transported to Howard University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m. The remains were then taken to the D.C. Medical Examiner's Office.

The case was closed with the arrest of 50-year-old Eddie Luther Daye, of the 600 block of P Street, NW. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in D.C. Superior Court .
