Crime Emergency Statistics, July 12-October 29, Are Released

On Tuesday, July 11, 2006, Chief of Police Charles H. Ramsey announced a Crime Emergency due to an increase in violent crime. The Crime Emergency initiative was officially implemented on July 12, 2006.

 

Following are the statistics since the crime emergency was initiated, from July 12 through October 29, 2006; also included are statistics for the most recent week, October 23, through October 29, 2006:

Curfew Violations
On July 21, the DC Council passed the Enhanced Crime Prevention and Abatement Emergency Amendment Act of 2006, giving the Mayor the authority to set alternative curfew hours. Beginning July 31, 2006, and continuing through October 19, 2006, alternative curfew hours for young people 16 and younger were set from 10 pm to 6 am, every night of the week.

Effective Friday, October 20, curfew hours in the District of Columbia for individuals 16 and younger returned to the school year hours of 11 pm to 6 am (Sun-Thurs); and 12:01 am to 6 am (Fri-Sat).

** These numbers do not include the firearms recovered by MPD during the special Gun Buy-Back Program held on September 16, 2006. During the gun-buy back, MPD recovered 337 firearms.
