Arrest Made in Homicide on 11th Street, NW

At approximately 2:46 am, on Sunday, January 28, 2007, an adult Hispanic male, identified as 30-year-old Andres Benitez Juarez, of the 1200 block of 11th Street, NW, reportedly armed with a baseball bat, allegedly began swinging the bat at several men in front of a location in the 1200 block of 11th Street, NW.  At that time, one of the men reportedly grabbed the bat from Juarez and allegedly struck him with it.  Mr. Juarez was taken to the Howard University Hospital and pronounced dead.

A security officer working across the street, upon observing the incident, immediately rushed to the scene and subdued the man armed with the bat, pending the arrival of police.

Arrested and subsequently charged with Murder Two While Armed was 21-year-old Herman Melendez, of an unknown address.
