On
Thursday, October 26, 2000, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Third District
officers were summoned to an apartment located inside of 1823 Summit Place,
NW to investigate the report of a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, witnesses
advised officers that they had heard their neighbors arguing and then
a loud noise. Afterwards, the adult female and four juveniles left the
apartment.
Police then responded to Howard
University Hospital for the report of a 9-year-old male shooting victim.
It was then determined that the victim had been shot in the 1823 Summit
Place apartment police had been called to earlier for the report of a
domestic dispute.
Investigation into the incident reveals that the couple who resides on
Summit Place became involved in a verbal altercation. As a result, a 15-year-old
female who also resides there obtained a handgun. Reportedly, a struggle
over the gun between the adult female and the teenage female ensued. Consequently,
the gun accidentally discharged, grazing the 15-year-old girl's right
hand and striking a 9-year-old boy in the left side. Their names are being
withheld because they are juveniles.
Both the 15-year-old and 9-year-old were treated at Howard University
Hospital. The girl was treated and released; the boy was admitted in stable
condition for additional treatment of the in-and-out gunshot wound to
his side. No other injuries were reported.
No charges have been filed at this time. The case is currently under investigation
by members of the Third District .
The findings of the investigation will be presented to the U.S
Attorney's Office regarding the domestic dispute between the adults
and to the Corporation Council regarding the matter of the shooting involving
the 15-year-old female to determine what, if any, charges will be placed.
