In coordination with La Clínica del Pueblo, the Metropolitan Police Department's Latino Advisory Council will sponsor a Latino Community Health and Public Safety Fair on Saturday, February 17, 2007, at the Brightwood Elementary School, 1300 Nicholson Street, NW. The event will be conducted in Spanish, with English interpretation provided. A continental brunch will be served from 10 am until 2 pm.
The event will begin at 10 am with free health screenings provided by La Clínica del Pueblo and child photo ID cards provided by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The Clínica del Pueblo will provide free tests and information on cholesterol, glucose, HIV, blood pressure, diabetes, nutrition, and others to all interested men, women and children attending the event.
From 11 am until 1 pm, various speakers will provide information on crimes against Latinos, how to prepare for fire emergencies, MPD services for crime victims, and other subjects. La Clínica del Pueblo and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will resume providing health screenings and photo IDs from 1 to 2 pm.
The fair will be the second in a series of quarterly community meetings with Latinos that are held in different areas of the city during the current fiscal year, and will be similar in format to the monthly meetings held in police service areas throughout the city. The central theme of this quarterly meeting will be “Health and Public Safety Services Available to Latinos.”
The Metropolitan Police Department's Latino Advisory Council consists of community, government, and police representatives. Current members include representatives of La Clínica del Pueblo, the Council of Latino Agencies, DC Learns, Councilmember Jim Graham's Office, the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs, Neighborhood Services for Wards 1 and 4, Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, the DC Department of Human Services' Income Maintenance Administration, MPD's Latino Liaison Unit, and MPD's Third and Fourth District Commanders.
