Two More Regional Command Offices Relocate to New Neighborhood-Based Facilities

In a continuing effort to locate more police functions directly in the communities they serve, Metropolitan Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey announced today that two more Regional Operations Command (ROC) offices have moved from centralized District buildings into new neighborhood-based facilities.

ROC North , which includes the Second and Fourth police districts, has relocated to modular units on the grounds of the former Petworth Elementary School, 801 Shepherd St., NW. The ROC, headed by Assistant Chief Ronald Monroe , plans to move into the former schoolhouse once a year-long renovation program is completed. ROC North was previously housed in the Henry J. Daly Building ( Police Headquarters ), 300 Indiana Ave., NW.

ROC Central , which cover the First , Third and Fifth districts, has relocated to office space provided by XM Satellite Radio in its new headquarters at 1500 Eckington Place, NE, in the District's new high-tech corridor. Commanded by Assistant Chief William McManus , ROC Central had previously been located in the MPD's former Traffic Branch office at 501 New York Ave., NW.

Last month, ROC East relocated from DC Village in Southwest to the Penn-Branch Shopping Center, Pennsylvania and Branch Avenues, SE. ROC East includes the Sixth and Seventh districts and is commanded by Assistant Chief Michael Fitzgerald .

"Relocating all three of our Regional Operations Commands is part of an ongoing effort to place our operational units in the heart of the communities they serve," Ramsey said. "In all three locations, our Department looks forward to joining with other organizations and businesses to serve as a foundation in helping to rebuild and restore our neighborhoods."

Mayor Anthony A. Williams added, "As with the relocation of the Department of Motor Vehicles to Georgia Avenue, we are making sure that our residents have easy access to city services where they live and work."

Each ROC is responsible for managing and coordinating crime fighting and community policing efforts in its respective police districts. The ROC office houses the region's assistant chief, as well as crime and budget analysts and a small administrative staff. In addition, ROC Central contains the Department's Prostitution Unit.

Under the reorganization plan Chief Ramsey implemented two years ago to better support community policing, the District's seven police districts are organized into three Regional Operations Commands. Following are the new addresses and telephone numbers for all three ROCs:
