At
approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday, October 30, 2000, members
of the Maryland Safe Streets Task Force, which is composed
of Maryland State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation,
and the Prince George's County Police, were conducting an
undercover drug operation in the Langdon Park area located
in Northeast Washington. One of the Safe Street members, 37-year-old
Trooper Edward Toatley, was reportedly in his vehicle
with a suspect in the 2000 block of Douglas Street, N.E. It
was at this time that the suspect allegedly produced a handgun
and fatally shot Trooper Toatley before making good his escape.
Trooper Toatley was taken to the Washington
Hospital Center's MedStar Unit and pronounced dead at
11:05 p.m.
A search of the immediate area was conducted with negative
results. The case is currently under investigation by detectives
of the Fifth District .

The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a TEN THOUSAND-DOLLAR
REWARD to anyone who provides information, which leads
to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible.

THOUSAND DOLLARS for information that leads to the arrest
and indictment of the person or persons responsible.

Update:
Today detectives of the Fifth District obtained an arrest
warrant charging 23-year-old Kofi Apea Orleans-Lindsay
with First degree Murder While Armed. He is described as a
dark complexioned black male 6' tall, 180 pounds with brown
eyes and black hair. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone who sees him or knows of his whereabouts should take
no immediate action, but instead contact Fifth District detectives
at 202-727-4504 or the D.C. Crime Solvers Unit at 1-800-673-2777.
