The Metropolitan Police Department announced Monday that it plans to ensure the safety of the District’s public school children in the event that some Hawk One Security employees fail to report for duty on Tuesday. On March 9, Hawk One employees learned they would not receive their paychecks on time because the firm’s payroll guarantor — Wells Fargo — canceled its agreement to underwrite its payroll.
Hawk One Security is responsible for providing security at all of the District’s public schools. While the company expects all of its employees to report to work as assigned Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police Department will deploy 110 officers to DCPS facilities across the city beginning at 7:30 am. These officers, who will be reassigned temporarily from specialized assignments, will be available to support the existing 99 School Resource Officers assigned to public schools and to address any gaps in service. Hawk One will also employ managerial staff to assist in filling any vacancies as necessary.
In addition, the firm provides security to other District government facilities. To ensure the safety and security of the District’s public employees, the DC Office of Personnel Management’s Protective Services Division will deploy its members to government buildings.
The situation is expected to be resolved in the near future. Hawk One is in negotiations with a new lending institution and anticipates making full payment — including covering any penalties that its employees may have incurred — by Thursday, March 15.
