On Friday, May 25, 2007, detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit arrested a suspect wanted for a series of armed robberies of taxicab drivers committed since May 17, 2007. As a result of a police stakeout, the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Michael Tyrone Middleton, of the 3200 block of High Timber Court in Waldorf, Maryland, was arrested, without incident, at 3:45 pm in front of Union Station, located at 50 Massachusetts Avenue, NE. At the time of his arrest, a handgun was recovered, as well as a bag containing sunglasses and a change of clothing, which the suspect apparently intended to use to alter his appearance following another robbery.
Michael T. Middleton has been charged with armed robbery in connection with the following offenses. In each case, he allegedly caught a cab in front of Union Station, had the cabbie drive him to somewhere between the 3300 and 3900 blocks of East Capitol Street, SE, where he allegedly robbed the cabbie at gunpoint before fleeing the scene of the crime on foot.
- On Thursday, May 17, 2007, a cab driver picked up a fare, drove the individual to a location on East Capitol Street, SE, at which point he was robbed at gunpoint.
- On Saturday, May 19, 2007, a cabbie picked up a fare and drove the subject to a location on East Capitol Street, SE, at which point he was robbed at gunpoint.
- On Wednesday, May 23, 2007, a cab driver picked up a fare, drove the individual to a location on East Capitol Street, SE, at which point he was robbed at gunpoint.
- On Thursday, May 24, 2007, a cabbie picked up a fare, drove the subject to a location on East Capitol Street, SE, at which point he was robbed at gunpoint.
Mr. Middleton is scheduled to be arraigned in DC Superior Court on four counts of Robbery While Armed.
