Officer-Involved Shooting at 611 Edgewood Street, NE

At approximately 1:45 am, on Sunday, June 3, 2007, officers from the Fifth District responded to an apartment building located at 611 Edgewood Street, NE, for the report of disorderly subjects.  Upon arrival officers encountered a subject in the 4th floor stairway. It was at this time that the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at the officers. As a result an officer subsequently drew his service weapon and fired striking the subject multiple times in the body. DC Fire Department emergency medical personnel responded to the scene but could find no signs consistent with life. The suspect who has been identified as 25-year-old Tyrone Hines, Jr., of the 600 block of Edgewood Street, NE, was transported to the Office of the DC Medical Examiner where he was pronounced dead. 

A gun and drugs were recovered on the scene.

The officer involved in this shooting is a six-year veteran. He and his partner have been placed on routine administrative leave with pay. The case is being investigated by the  department’s Office of Professional Responsibility’s  Force Investigation Team and the Violent Crimes Branch.
