Triple Traffic Fatality at 53rd & East Capitol Streets, SE

At approximately 5 am on Saturday, August 4, 2007, a 1997 GMC Yukon was allegedly racing another vehicle at a high rate of speed eastbound on East Capitol Street, SE.  The Yukon reportedly ran a red light at 53rd Street, SE, and was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet Trail Blazer that was traveling northbound on 53rd Street, SE.  The driver of the Trail Blazer was not injured.  The Yukon struck a fire hydrant, police call box, street sign and a tree when it began to flip and strike a parked unoccupied Buick Regal.  The Yukon came to a rest on its roof.

A front seat passenger of the Yukon, identified as 28-year-old Kwan Cavanaugh of the 1300 block of First Street, N.W., was taken to the Prince George’s Hospital Center and pronounced dead.  DC Fire Department emergency medical personnel responded to the scene but found no signs of life in a rear seat passenger, identified as 25-year-old Darryl Taylor, Jr., of the 1200 block of G Street, SE, and the driver of the Yukon, identified as 24-year-old Corey Williams of the 500 block of Wilson Bridge Drive in Oxon Hill, Maryland.  They were taken to the Office of the DC Medical Examiner and pronounced dead.  The driver of the vehicle that was allegedly racing the Yukon was located.

The case is under investigation by members of the department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit.
