(Washington, DC) -- Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced the final arrest figures for the third All Hands on Deck which took place 6 am August 6, 2007 through 11 pm August 7, 2007. All Hands on Deck is part of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Summer Crime initiative intended to stem traditional spikes in crime during the months of June through August.
“I consider the Summer Crime initiative to be a success. Not only did officers make more than 300 arrests during the third All Hands on Deck, they were out on patrol and interacting with the community. And that is what’s most important,” said Chief Lanier. “Good police work and increased public safety is about more than just arrest numbers, it is also about having good relationships with the community. My officers will continue to be more visible and accessible to protect District residents and visitors no matter the time of year.”
Starting in June, all three All Hands on Deck netted more than 1,500 arrests, compared to 970 arrests during the same periods in 2006.
The Summer Crime Initiative continues through August 17, 2007 with the Summer of Safety (SoS) campaign. During SoS, MPD is providing a summer calendar of supervised activities for District school students at little to no cost. The SoS campaign coincides with the school break. Parents and kids may call
