At approximately 10:00 on the night of Tuesday, August 14, 2007, a lone male entered the Subway Liquor Store, located at 500 K Street, NW, and apparently became involved in an argument with the store owner over the sale of merchandise. It was at this time that the subject produced a handgun and shot the owner in the body and a 38-year-old male customer in the leg before fleeing.
The store owner, identified as 76-year-old John Shaw, of the 4200 block of 58th Avenue in Bladensburg, Maryland, was originally taken to the Howard University Hospital but later transferred to Walter Reed Hospital. He was pronounced dead Friday afternoon, August 24, 2007. The customer shot in the leg was treated and released from an area hospital. The suspect in this case is described as a black male in his early twenties, 5’8” to 5’11” tall, approximately 185 pounds with a scruffy beard and dread locks.
The case is under investigation by members of the department’s Violent Crimes Branch. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call police at 202/727-9099.
The department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
