At approximately 7:49 pm on Saturday, August 18, 2007, police were called to the 4400 block of Livingston Road, SE, for the report of a man down.  Upon arrival they located 45-year-old Charles Smith III, of no fixed address, suffering from an apparent stab wound to the chest.  He was taken to the Howard University Hospital and pronounced dead.

On Thursday, September 27, 2007, detectives assigned to the department’s Violent Crimes Branch arrested 29-year-old Joseph Harrington, of the 2600 block of Birney Place, SE.  He was charged with Murder Two While Armed in connection with the murder of Charles Smith, III.
