At approximately 2 am on Saturday, October 6, 2007, police were called to the 1300 block of Congress Street, SE for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival officers located 20-year-old William Bates, of the 1300 block of Savannah Street, SE, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the Howard University Hospital and pronounced dead.

On Saturday, October 6, 2007, the above case was closed with the arrest of 22-year-old Alonzo Vaughn, of the 1900 Block of Naylor Road, SE. He was charged with Murder Two While Armed.
