On Tuesday, October 16, 2007 members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (composed of members of the Metropolitan Police Department and United States Marshals Service) made an arrest in a 10-year-old unsolved homicide case in which a bank security guard was killed during an attempted robbery.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Cold Case Squad developed information leading to an arrest warrant charging 52-year-old John Williams, of the unit block of R Street NE, with felony murder while armed.
At approximately 9:30 am on July 17, 1997, Williams allegedly entered the District of Columbia Teachers Federal Credit Union, located at 903 D Street, NE, with the apparent intent to rob the establishment. Once inside, Williams allegedly encountered a Wells Fargo security guard identified as 36-year-old Thurman Craig Brown of the 2400 block of 15th Place, SE. Williams allegedly shot Mr. Brown multiple times before fleeing. Mr. Brown was taken to DC General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
On Tuesday at approximately 9 am, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested Williams without incident, in the 5400 block of Sunnyside Avenue in Beltsville, Maryland.
