A Crackdown on Gridlock
MPDC Enforcement Action Targets Red-Light Runners, Jaywalkers

Officers from the First, Second and Third police districts participated in the enhanced enforcement effort, which took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The targeted area included 17th Street at I and K Streets, NW; L Street at 17th, 19th and 20th Streets, NW; and Connecticut Avenue at K, L and N Streets, NW. All of these intersections are located within the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District.

The MPDC and the Golden Triangle BID recently launched a joint effort to ease gridlock in the central business district through education and enforcement of traffic regulations. In March, the Golden Triangle BID erected signs at various intersections declaring them "No Red-Light Running" enforcement zones. Police officers have stepped up traffic enforcement and control at these locations, including Thursday's cooperative effort involving the three police districts.

On Thursday, officers reported the following activity:

  • 29 citations for red light violations. These carry fines of $75 and two on the violator's permit.
  • 134 citations for obstructing intersections or crosswalks. Each of these violations carries a fine of $50.
  • 691 verbal warnings to jaywalkers. Jaywalking carries a $5 fine.

Thursday's more intensive enforcement action was the first of three planned for this spring. Similar anti-gridlock initiatives will be carried out May 10 and May 24.

Just to the west of the Golden Triangle BID, in the downtown area, the MPDC has entered into a similar anti-gridlock campaign with the Downtown DC Business Improvement District.
