MPD Officers to Distribute New Coats to Elementary School Students

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Patrol Services and School Security Bureau have purchased new winter coats through a local nonprofit agency and will deliver the outerwear to children at Plummer Elementary School in southeast on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 1 PM.

The MPD is working with the Coats for Kids Foundation based in Alexandria, VA. The charitable foundation distributes new winter coats along with new gloves and hats.

“The Patrol Services and School Security Bureau is honored to partner with the Coats for Kids Foundation,” said Assistant Chief Diane Groomes. “MPD is in the business of protecting kids and in this season of giving, we are happy to give children the coats they need to stay warm this winter.

“MPD’s officers see and know the kids who need our collective help,” said Paul Darby, who co-founded the Coats for Kids Foundation. “This partnership validates our belief that giving a child a new, first-quality winter coat is a critical element in building that child’s self-esteem and self-worth.  It may be the spark that helps that child participate and focus on school.”
