Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced the results of a Gun Amnesty Program which was conducted on Saturday, December 29, 2007, at three locations in the District of Columbia. The Gun Amnesty Program which is a part of the Metropolitan Police Department’s commitment to reducing gun violence in the District offered an opportunity for people to turn in their weapons to authorities without fear of prosecution. Participating locations included the Shiloh Baptist Church located at 1510 9th Street, NW, (located within the Third Police District), Johnson Memorial Baptist Church located at 800 Ridge Road, SE (located within the Sixth Police District) and Union Temple Baptist Church located at 1225 W Street, SE (located with the Seventh Police District).
The total numbers for this program which began at 8 am and ended at 4 pm are as follows:
The total numbers broken down by participating locations are as follows:
- 242 guns turned in (Third District Location)
- 58 guns turned in (Sixth District Location)
- 49 guns turned in (Seventh District Location)
A total of $18,650 was paid for turn-ins under this program.
