Pedestrian Fatality on Interstate 295

The Major Crash Investigations Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding a pedestrian fatality that occurred early this morning.

On Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at approximately 12:08 am, a pedestrian apparently attempted to cross Interstate 295 and was struck by a 2000 Mercedes ML-320 SUV traveling southbound just south of East Capitol Street SE.  The victim was transported to the Washington Hospital Center’s MedSTAR Unit where he was pronounced dead at 4:27 am.   The decedent in this case has been identified as 69-year-old Charlie King of the 400 block of Burbank Street, SE.

The operator of the vehicle identified as 60-year-old Janet Mays Jackson of Fort Washington, Maryland, was apparently uninjured as a result of this accident.

A preliminary investigation into this case reveals that a pedestrian violation may have been a contributing factor in this fatality.
