The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the publics assistance in attempting to identify a suspect that is currently being sought in connection with a sexual assault.
On Thursday, October 28, 1999, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a 29-year-old woman was attempting to enter her apartment located in the 600 block of 3rd Street, N.E. At that time the victim, who was carrying groceries, observed the suspect standing by the entrance of the building. As the victim was entering the building she apparently dropped some of her groceries at which time the suspect offered to help her carry the items inside. Upon helping the victim carry her groceries inside of her apartment building, the suspect exited the building. However, the investigation into this case reveals that the suspect appeared to have left the front door ajar upon leaving in order that he could re-enter the building.
Upon re-entering the building the suspect approached the victim on the pretense that he was looking for a resident of that apartment complex. The suspect then proceeded up one staircase while the victim walked up another. The suspect then confronted the victim in the stairwell she was using. He produced a sharp object, threatened the victim, tore away items of her clothing and sexually assaulted her. A resident entering the building startled the suspect, at which point he ran from the apartment building. Authorities were summoned to the scene and the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the assault.
The suspect in this case is described as a well-groomed and articulate dark complexioned black male believed to be in his early to mid-twenties, approximately 5 8" tall, weighing approximately 160 pounds, with a moustache and short black wavy hair. He was wearing a black waist-length leather jacket, a blue silk shirt, black dress pants and black dress shoes. He was also carrying a black colored day-planner.
