The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Northwest Washington man.
On Monday, March 24, 2008, at approximately 4:42 p.m., emergency personnel were called for the report of an unconscious man inside of a private residence located in the 4300 block of 36th Street, NW. The man who has been identified as 72-year-old John Winter of the 4300 block of 36th Street, NW, was subsequently pronounced dead on the scene by a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
Upon their arrival, a preliminary investigation conducted by emergency personnel on the scene indicated the possible presence of a toxic substance. As a result of that finding, several precautionary measures were taken including the temporary restriction of vehicular traffic into the block and the transportation of several first responders to an area hospital for evaluation. At this time there appears to have been no reported illness or environmental impact to the community as a result of this incident.
There appear to be no outward signs of foul play in connection with this case; however, the exact cause and manner of death in this case will be determined pending an autopsy to be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
