At approximately 3:10 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 1999, the operator of a Ford pickup truck passed several road barriers and collided with two pedestrians at the intersection of 5th and M Streets, SE. Subsequently, the truck crashed into a backhoe.
The operator of the pickup truck was transported to George Washington University Hospital where he was treated and released. One of the pedestrians was transported to D.C. General Hospital where he was treated for contusions and abrasions. The other pedestrian succumbed to his injuries on the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next-of-kin.
The circumstances of the accident are currently under investigation by detectives assigned to the Major Crash Investigation Unit. No further details are available at this time.
