MPD Announces Plan in Response to Homicides and Violent Crimes

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier announced today the District’s response to the multiple homicides and shootings which occurred on Saturday April 26, 2008.  Staring immediately, The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will enhance uniform patrol coverage, and enhance staffing citywide -- particularly in those areas where there has been an increase in violent crime.

“I have mobilized all manpower and all specialized units to focus on specific areas using a variety of tactics.  We have also partnered with local and federal law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the violence,” said Chief Lanier.

The following homicides occurred on April 26, 2008.  The MPD is offering a reward of up to $25,000 dollars for each of the homicide cases noted below:

  • 8th and Yuma Street, SE – At approximately 12:32 am, police were called to Greater Southeast Hospital for the report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, police located 31-year-old Kenneth Walley of the 3900 block of 8th Street, SE, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body. 
  • 3000 block of Stanton Road, SE – At approximately 12:55 am, police responded for the report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, officers located 28-year-old Billy Evans Middleton, of the 3000 block of Stanton Road, SE, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
  • Morse and Montello Streets, NE – At approximately 2:07 am, police were called to the intersection of Morse and Montello Streets, NE, for the report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, officer located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the body.  His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
  • 2400 block of Elvans Road, SE --  At approximately 4 am, police were called to the 2400 block of Elvans Road, SE, for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival officers located 20-year-old Erric Woods, of Capital Heights, in Maryland, suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds to the body. 

The following violent crimes occurred on April 25-26, 2008:

April 25, 2008

  • 2700 block of Langston Place, SE – Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Gun) – At approximately 11:23 pm, one male shot in leg; second male shot in the forearm. Both victims transported themselves to Greater Southeast Hospital. 
  • 100 block of Galveston Place, SW – Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Gun) – At approximately 11:25 pm, one male was shot in the buttocks and back; one female received a flesh wound as the result of the ricochet.  Each were transported to Greater Southeast Hospital
  • Intersection of Ainger Place and Langston Place, SE – Assault with a Deadly Weapon (Gun) – At approximately 11:41 pm, one male shot in right forearm; one male shot in the buttocks.  Each was transported to Greater Southeast Hospital.

April 26, 2008

  • 1200 block of Eaton Road, SE – Assault with Intent to Kill (Knife) – At approximately 1:40 am, one female stabbed multiple times.  The victim was transported to MedStar.
  • 1000 block of Half Street, SW – Assault with Intent to Kill (Gun) – At approximately 2:00 am, one male shot in the back; second male shot in the leg.  Each was transported to Howard University Hospital.  ** Investigators are still trying to determine where this shooting occurred.  The victims may have sustained their injuries in Prince George’s County.
