The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two persons in the 3000 block of Military Road, NW.
At approximately 11:11 this morning, Thursday, May 15, 2008, officers from the Second District were called to the Ingleside Presbyterian Retirement Community in the 3000 block of Military Road, NW, to investigate the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult female in the parking garage area of that facility suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers then located a second victim, an adult male also suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Both of the victims were subsequently pronounced dead on the scene by a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
The decedents in this case have been identified as 90-year-old Richard Funkhouser and 84-year-old Phyllis Funkhouser, who resided at Ingleside. Their next of kin were notified by the company that manages the retirement community.
A preliminary investigation into this case reveals that external foul play is not apparent in connection with these deaths. However, it should be noted that at this time all of the circumstances surrounding this case remain under investigation by detectives from the department’s Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch.
