Traffic Fatality at RFK Stadium

Investigators assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a fatal traffic accident which occurred on a parking lot at RFK Stadium.

On Friday, May 16, 2008, at approximately 7:30 pm, a woman was operating a 2002 Volvo S80, traveling westbound on East Capitol Street, NE towards RFK Stadium.

As East Capitol Street curves to the north around RFK Stadium, the Volvo mounted the south curb and traveled across the grassy median.  The Volvo continued west and crossed over the roadway which creates a circle around RFK Stadium.  The Volvo then crossed a walkway and struck a chain link fence that secures Parking Lot#5.  After passing through the fence, the Volvo struck the rear of a 1987 Mercedes-Benz, which was parked inside Lot#5.  The impact caused the Mercedes-Benz to strike a wooden ramp that was attached to a temporary trailer. Subsequently, the operator of the Volvo, identified as 71-year-old Rosa Virginia Rivers, of the 1900 block of C Street, NE, was transported to Howard University Hospital in an unresponsive condition.  She was pronounced at 8:10 pm.

Personnel of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia did not find any injury associated with the collision. Apparently, the accident may be due to some type of medical emergency suffered by the operator of the vehicle.
