The Metropolitan Police Department kicks off its Summer of Safety program today. The initiative is intended to engage youth in the District by providing them with fun, structured activities during the 73 days between the last day of school and the first day of school. MPD will host a series of block parties today to kick off the Summer of Safety. A calendar of summer activities will be available at the block party events.
“The first Summer of Safety in 2007 was a huge success,” said Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier. “This year we have expanded our calendar to include approximately 500 fun activities and events throughout all seven police districts. The calendar is full of cultural events, camp information, self-improvement activities, job training, and more.”
For youth who are old enough to work, MPD has partnered with the Department of Employment Services to offer jobs with MPD. Parents and kids may stop by their district stations to get an updated calendar of events, call (202) I’m Bored, or go online to www.mpdc.dc.gov/SOS for more information.
