July 2002 Murder Case Closed

Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Case Squad have announced an arrest in a 2002 murder case.  The suspect, identified as 57-old Larry D. McCoy, of the 600 block of Tuckerman Street, NW, was arrested on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant charging him with Second Degree Murder in the death of Tracey Renee Davis.

On Friday, March 1, 2002, at approximately 11:17 am, members of the Fifth District were dispatched along with D.C. Fire Department emergency medical personnel to “The Downtown Motel,” located at 1345 4th Street, NE.  Upon arrival, they discovered the decedent, later identified as Tracey Renee Davis, in an unconscious state inside of one of the rooms.  She was transported to Howard University Hospital and pronounced dead.

Detective Susan Blue of the Major Case Squad investigated the case.  She developed Larry D. McCoy as her primary suspect.  She developed a series of evidence, but the case was in need of analysis of the forensic evidence.

FBI Special Agent Viet Nguyen was detailed to the Major Case Squad earlier this year to assist in the investigation of cold cases.  With his assistance the needed forensic analysis was conducted, affirming the case evidence previously established.  This resulted in the subsequent issuance of a DC Superior Court arrest warrant charging Larry D. McCoy with Second Degree Murder.  He will be arraigned tomorrow in DC Superior Court.
