The Metropolitan Police Department has announced that an arrest has been made in the murder of Derrick Green, which occurred on July 17, 2008 on Vermont Avenue, NW. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Angelo Fennell, was arrested on August 26, 2008 pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant charging him with Murder I While Armed.
On Thursday, July 17, 2008, at approximately 2 am, officers assigned to the Third District responded to the alley in the rear of the 1300 block of Vermont Avenue, NW to investigate the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they located 18-year-old Derrick Green, of the 1300 block of 14th Street, NW, suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire Department emergency medical personnel responded to the scene, but were unable to find any signs consistent with life. Subsequently, the victim was pronounced dead on the scene by a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
This case was brought to closure through the investigative efforts of Detective Manuel Gaffney and Detective Gail Russell-Brown of Homicide Squad Six, led by Detective Sergeant Daniel Wagner of the Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch. Chief of Police Cathy L. Lanier commended them for their expertise and diligence.
