Arrest Made in 1998 Homicide of Michael Womack

The Metropolitan Police Department announced an arrest has been made in the homicide of 25-year-old Michael Nathaniel Womack, who was killed in August of 1998. On Wednesday, October, 8, 2008, at 4 pm, 42-year-old James Wade Irving, of the 1800 block of Valley Terrace, SE, was placed under arrest and charged with First Degree Murder While Armed.

On Monday, August 31, 1998, at 11:30 pm, members of the Sixth District responded to 1801 28th Place, SE for the report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, they located three victims inside of that location suffering from gunshot wounds.  Michael Nathaniel Womack, of the 28th Place address, was transported by ambulance to DC General Hospital.  On September 1, 1998, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.  

The second victim, a 20-year-old, was transported to an area hospital and was admitted in critical condition.  The third victim, a 10-year-old, was transported to an area hospital and was admitted in stable condition.

This case was investigated and closed by Detective Gus Giannakoulias and his partner Detective Thomas Webb, with the assistance of the members of Squad 5.  Chief of Police Cathy L. Lanier praised them for their tenacity and outstanding investigative techniques.
