The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding a woman who was attacked by a dog in the 1800 block of 41st Place, SE.
Shortly 5:00 pm on Monday, December 8, 2008, officers from the Sixth District responded to the 1800 block of 41st Place, SE, to investigate the report of a woman being attacked by a dog. Upon arrival, the officers observed a woman being viciously mauled by a dog. The officers fearing the woman was in immediate extreme peril were forced to fire their service weapons at the dog to stop the attack.
The victim, a 75-year-old woman from Southeast Washington, was subsequently transported by Medevac to an area hospital suffering from severe multiple dog bites. She has been admitted in serious condition. Her identity is being withheld at this time due to the fact that she is a witness in this case.
One of the officers involved on the scene suffered minor injuries during the course of this incident. There were no other injuries reported to any other citizens or departmental members involved.
The dog which appeared to be a Pit Bull was taken into custody by the Washington Humane Society for treatment of its injuries.
