Arrest Made in the Homicide of Umar Jemele Saunders

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide and Sexual Offenses Branch announced an arrest has been made in the homicide of Umar Jemele Saunders.

At approximately 3:30 pm, on Monday, December 15, 2008, members from the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 24-year-old William Edward Smith, of Southeast, DC, in connection with the murder of Umar Jemele Saunders. He was charged with Murder II While Armed.

On Wednesday, November 24, 2004, officers from the Sixth District responded to the 4400 block of B Street, SE for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located 26-year-old Umar Jemele Saunders, of the 600 Mississippi Avenue, SE. He had been fatally shot.
