Death Investigation in the 600 Block of 23rd Street, NW

The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 19-year-old woman who was discovered unconscious inside of a residence hall on the campus of George Washington University.

At approximately 8:15 am on Friday, January 23, 2009, Second District officers along with members from the George Washington University Police Department were called to the 600 block of 23rd Street, NW to investigate the report of an unconscious person inside of a residence hall at that location. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult female in an apparent unconscious condition. Personnel from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department subsequently responded, but were unable to find any signs consistent with life.  The woman was subsequently pronounced dead on the scene at 9:55 am  by a representative from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.

The decedent in this case has been identified as 19-year-old Laura Treanor of Yorktown Heights, New York.

This case remains under investigation by members assigned to the department’s Natural Death Squad in cooperation with the George Washington University Police Department.

Based upon a preliminary investigation, there appears to be no signs of trauma with respect to this case.  However, the exact cause and manner of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.
