Members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Harbor Patrol determined that a second Good Samaritan apparently was lost while attempting to help the 11-year-old boy who fell into the Potomac River on Sunday. It has been confirmed that a man was reported missing to Virginia authorities after going fishing on the Potomac River that day.
On Sunday, April 26, 2009, at about 4:57 pm, members of the DC Harbor Patrol and DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to a 911 call for a person in the water and rescued an adult male.
The man rescued from the river was interviewed and it was determined that his 11-year-old son had slipped on some rocks while they were fishing and fell into the Potomac just south of Chain Bridge Road on the Virginia shoreline. The boy’s father attempted to rescue him along with another Good Samaritan. The father was unable to reach the boy and the Good Samaritan exited the water immediately after entering the river.
The search and rescue continued until dark for the missing boy and upon dark, DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services units called off the search. It was then turned into a recovery mission led by the DC Harbor Patrol Unit.
On Monday, April 27, 2009, after searching the entire day for the missing boy, it was determined that a second person also apparently is missing in connection with this incident. The second person did not return home from fishing on the Virginia shoreline on Sunday and a missing person report was filed in Virginia. The missing person’s vehicle was located at the parking lot on Chain Bridge Road and was recovered by Second District personnel and held for safekeeping.
The bodies have yet to be recovered.
