Detectives assigned to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced today that arrests have been made in the homicide of 20-year-old Demetrius Matthews, who was fatally shot in the 1900 block of Second Street, NE on Sunday, May 17, 2009.
As the result of the execution of multiple search warrants within the Fifth District by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, with the assistance of members of the United States Marshals Service, the Fifth District, and the department’s Emergency Response Team, 18-year-old Cornell Scrivner of Northeast DC was arrested on Thursday, July 30, 2009 by homicide detectives. He has been charged with Murder One While Armed in the shooting death of Mr. Matthews.
A second suspect, a 16-year-old male from Northeast, DC, was arrested at 2:15 pm on Thursday, July 30, 2009. He is also being charged with Murder One While Armed in the shooting death of Mr. Matthews. His identity is being withheld because he is a juvenile.
While executing the search warrants, firearms were discovered. Eighteen-year-old Craig Jermaine Peacock of Northeast, DC faces weapons charges. Craig Peacock is not a suspect in the homicide.
At approximately 3:57 am on Sunday, May 17, 2009, officers from the Fifth District responded to the 1900 block of Second Street, NE, to investigate the report of the sounds of gunshots at that location. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds.
The victim, who was identified as 20-year-old Demetrius Matthews of the 2000 block of Amherst Road in Hyattsville, Maryland, was transported by personnel from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
